Rural Immersion for Sustainability & Empowerment 2026
St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM) has re-envisioned its flagship Rural
Immersion Programme as Rural Immersion for Sustainability & Empowerment,
reflecting a deeper commitment to experiential learning, social responsibility, and sustainable
development.
In 2026, the programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from 600 MBA students,
conducted in two phases. The first batch visited villages from 28th October to 1st
November, and the second batch from 25th to 29th November. Students were immersed in
the rural ecosystems of Bijapur, Hangal, and Manvi, regions where the Jesuit mission
actively engages in social development initiatives.
Students stayed in village homes and social service centres, embracing community life and
experiencing rural realities firsthand. The immersion was designed not as a visit, but as a
lived experience — fostering empathy, cultural sensitivity, and grassroots engagement.
Key Activities Undertaken
SJIM Rural Immersion: Caring for the Common Good
At SJIM, we strongly believe in the integral formation of our PGDM students by helping them become men and women of substance.
“A person of substance is someone who strives to live a life that means something and who chooses to participate rather than be a spectator in life in order to be part of the solution as opposed to the problem”
SJIM desires students graduating from SJIM to be aware of the prevailing socioeconomic conditions in the country.
The Rural Immersion Program and other events like blood donation camps, collecting donations from the public to help people affected by natural disasters through marathons, walkathons are small steps in that direction. Students also need to be sensitized to the plight of the weaker sections of society and become responsible citizens. To give a greater thrust to this mission, SJIM organizes a Rural Immersion Programme. The objective of this is to not only expose our students to the rural community, but also to make them aware of a society that lives beyond our familiar urban setting and to help them understand how sound business principles can be used to better the lives of those in rural India. Participation in the Rural Immersion Program is compulsory for every student and is a non-credit activity.
