19 March 2021
St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM) commemorated 25 years since it received AICTE approval for its flagship two-year full-time Post Graduate Program in Management with a grand celebration on Thursday. SJIM is ably run by the Society of Jesus or the ‘Jesuits’, who are an international order of priests renowned all over the world for their strong 400-year tradition of service to society through education. This year marked twenty five years of impactful and inclusive education in business management by the Jesuits in Bangalore, whose education philosophy is “creating men and women for others”.
The program began with an address by Dr. Anantharaman, Provost, SJIM, which was followed by Dr. Manoj D’Souza S.J. leading the felicitation of the dignitaries. Rev Fr Dionysius Vaz, S.J., Provincial of Karnataka Jesuits and President of The Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society appreciated the past and present directors, deans, faculty members and students who have collaborated in the unique project of Jesuit business education in Bengaluru.
The Chief Guest of the event, AICTE Chairman Prof. Dr. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, commended the management of SJIM and said that AICTE itself espoused an ethical model in education, under which quality instruction is imparted in the context of cultural and socio-economic diversity. He exhorted SJIM to continue its pedagogical innovation so that its students “create the next Apples and Microsofts of the world in India.”
Along the same lines, Guest of Honour Mr. Kamal Bali, President & Managing Director, Volvo India opined that the post-pandemic world presented India with a golden opportunity for socio-economic growth, provided India appropriately manages the challenges of disruptive technologies, inter-organizational collaboration and sustainability. The SJIM management’s focus on the larger common good, he said, was, even now, in sync with the need of the hour. Guest of Honour, Mr. N.A. Haris, Honorable MLA of the local Shanthinagar constituency, in his address, presented students with a realistic picture of the current challenges and urged them to address them. From his experience in his constituency, he appreciated the “down-to-earth” Jesuit fathers whose “humanity and service to society” have served to build skill and capacity for the city and country.
During the program, the SJIM Eminent Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, instituted by SJIM to commemorate this silver jubilee, was awarded to Teach for India. Merit Scholarships of more than thirty-five lakh rupees were then awarded to sixty deserving students of the PGDM program to aid their studies. This was followed by the unveiling of a special silver jubilee souvenir, after which the longest serving staff of SJIM – Mr. S Prabhu and Mr. Paul Kumar - were felicitated. The Dean, Dr. Narasimhan, presented the Vote of Thanks.
SJIM draws from the rich educational heritage of St. Joseph’s College, which was established in 1882. Today, the institute offers its PGDM program (equivalent to MBA) in four specializations including Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Operations. SJIM maintains high academic standards and an exceptional placement record, and engenders a global outlook in its students by leveraging its international collaborations.
