St. Joseph’s Institute of Management (SJIM) held its 1st International Conference on Leadership Challenges in the Emerging Social and Business Landscape as part of its Golden Jubilee year celebrations on the 8th and 9th of February, 2019. The two day event saw eminent personalities from the field of business, academics, public speaking, consultancy, entrepreneurship and culture come together under one platform to share their thoughts, experiences and perspectives on leadership.
The event was inaugurated on 8th afternoon by the chief guest Mr. Ganesh S., Head-Human Resources, Global Decision Management Center, Citi, Bangalore. Mr. Ganesh emphasized on the need to focus on the ‘Why’ factor in the existence of the business rather than what it offers, which he believed could be achieved through clarity, discipline and consistency. This was followed by keynote addresses and parallel expert sessions including top management from Bosch, Citi, Canara bank, Infosys and IIT’s.
There were also delegates who took part in the paper presentations revolving around various sub themes under leadership. The presentations were chaired and reviewed by Dr. Caren Rodrigues and Dr. Anup Krishnamurthy, Assistant Professors and chairpersons at the Centre for Business Research, SJIM.
The evenings were filled with scintillating cultural performances by Raadha Kalpa Dance Company who performed classical Indian Bharatanatyam choreographed by Ms. Rukmini Vijaykumar. Mr. Akkarsh, a student of Music Technology and a 7th grade violinist from the Trinity College of London also mesmerized the audience with their favorite tunes along with his band.
The closing keynote address was delivered by Mr. Deepak Justin, an International speaker, corporate trainer and representative of India at the world Championship for Public Speaking and spoke about using one’s strengths and talents to make a change.
Col. Venkat Raman and Natasha Quadras from St. Francis Institute of Management and Research won the award for best paper presentation on the topic of ‘Leading high performance teams in a VUCA world’. Stephin Janvel and Antony Felix won the award for the poster competition held for students of SJIM. The conference was guided by Dr. R Narasimhan, Dean SJIM with the support of the faculty and students. It gave the delegates and students many new insights on leadership, its challenges and how to overcome them in a real business and social environment. The conference also served as a networking platform for students with experts from the industry.
