Fr. Olvin Veigas, SJ, faculty at St Joseph's Institute of Management,
Bengaluru, delivered a session on “Discernment and Leadership” to 50
student leaders from St. Joseph’s College of Law (SJCL), Bengaluru. The
session, introduced by Fr. Jerald D'Souza, SJ, the director of SJCL,
explored Ignatian spirituality as a foundation for leadership, emphasizing
self-reflection, awareness, and purposeful action.
Fr. Veigas discussed discernment as a core leadership skill, highlighting
the importance of aligning decisions with values and focusing on the
greater good. He presented practical Ignatian tools, including reflection
and the “Examination of Consciousness,” helping leaders make choices
with clarity and integrity. Through real-life examples, such as the case of
a public defender navigating ethical dilemmas, Fr. Veigas illustrated how
discernment leads to courageous, value-driven leadership.
The session concluded with a Q&A, where students engaged actively,
reflecting the talk's impact on their understanding of ethical and
compassionate leadership.
