Mission - Leadership in Present Indian Scenario


On July 16, 2024, Fr Olvin Veigas, SJ conducted a one-day Management Development Program (MDP) titled "Mission – Leadership in Present Indian Scenario" for Religious Leaders of India at the National Biblical Catechetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCLC) in Bangalore. The workshop included five insightful sessions, focusing on the contemporary challenges and opportunities for religious leadership in India.

The MDP conducted by Fr Olvin Veigas, SJ was a comprehensive and enlightening program that addressed the critical aspects of religious leadership in the current Indian scenario. The workshop provided religious leaders with valuable insights and practical strategies to navigate the complexities of today's world while staying true to their spiritual roots and mission. Fr Dr John Baptist, Director of NBCLC introduced the speaker of the day to the 45 participants. Sr Vijaya coordinated the event.

Details of the sessions are below:
Session 1: Setting the Context in Today's Scenario - World and India
Fr Veigas began the workshop by setting the context for understanding the present global and Indian scenarios.
This session included a detailed analysis of socio-political and economic data specific to India. Key points discussed were:
• Global Context: Geopolitical shifts, economic trends, and the impact of technology on global communication and relationships.
• Indian Context: Demographic changes, economic growth, and the current socio-political landscape. Fr Veigas provided specific data on India's economic indicators, population dynamics, and social challenges.

Session 2: Leadership in Changing Context
In the second session, Fr Veigas addressed the evolving nature of leadership in a rapidly changing context. He highlighted:
• Adaptive Leadership: The need for leaders to be flexible and responsive to new challenges and opportunities.
• Innovative Strategies: Implementing innovative approaches to address contemporary issues.
• Case Studies: Examples of effective leadership in various sectors, both within and outside the religious context.

Session 3: Religious Life Rooted and Relevant
This session focused on maintaining the relevance of religious life in modern society. Fr Veigas emphasized:
• Historical Roots: Understanding the foundational principles of religious life.
• Contemporary Relevance: Adapting these principles to meet the needs of today's society.
• Engagement with Society: Active participation in social issues and community service.

Session 4: Called to be Prophets and Mystics Today
In the fourth session, Fr Veigas explored the dual call to be both prophets and mystics in today's world. He discussed:
• Prophetic Voice: The role of religious leaders in advocating for justice, peace, and ethical conduct.
• Mystical Experience: Deepening spiritual practices to foster personal and communal transformation.
• Integration: Balancing the prophetic and mystical dimensions in religious leadership.
