Faculty Enhancement - Insights and Inspirations: A Distinguished Economist's Journey - Dr. Parthasarathi Shome


One of the best practices that all the Jesuit Institutions around world have been keeping the teaching faculty updated and motivated. It is done through knowledge enhancement sessions by experts in their domain. Dr Parthasarathi Shome, now, the Distinguished Professor of St Joseph’s Institute of Management, Bangalore shared his ideas and thoughts on his illustrious journey as world renowned economist and taxation expert.

Having served at the International Monetary Fund (1983-2004): Senior Economist in the Office of the Managing Director (1987-88), Chief of Tax Policy (1992-95) and Director (Ambassador), IMF Singapore Institute (2001-03), later as Chief Economist, HMRC, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), United Kingdom(2008-11). He also served in several official capacities in India including Chairman, Tax Administration Reform Commission (TARC), Government of India, (2013-15); Adviser (Minister of State) to the Indian Finance Minister, (2013-14); and Secretary (2004-08). He has helped more than 30 countries to improve the taxation policies.

Dr Shome shared his immense knowledge, expertise and experience in various countries as well as the academic rigour which he demonstrated in spite of the busy schedule. In fact, he kept up the connect with academia by publishing research articles and books over the years. He also shared his thoughts on his recent work, The Creation of Poverty and Inequality in India. Certainly, it was a fascinating, thought provoking and motivational talk for the SJIM faculty as Leading Economist took questions and answered them so meticulously and gracefully.
