SJIM Round Table: How automation and artificial intelligence will influence the workforce and HR departments in the coming decade

The HR Club at St. Joseph's Institute of Management (SJIM) Bangalore organized a round table conference on Thursday, 11th January 2018. The round table dealt with a crucial topic affecting organizations and countries, namely, how automation and artificial intelligence will influence the workforce and HR departments in the coming decade.
The panel consisted of Mr. Sandeep Das, Associate Director, PriceWaterhouseCoopers; Mr. Dhruv Sen, Consultant; Mr. Kaveri Karnam, Chief Operating Officer, Peepal Consulting; Mr. Naveen Alex, Associate Manager, Brillio; Mr. Rohin Radhakrishnan, Center Head, Shell and Mr. Venkatesh Ashwin, Associate Director, Mindtree.
The discussion was moderated by Advika Sequeira, Trupthi Venkatesh, Cyril Thomas and Johan Lewis, students of SJIM.
The panel concurred that while automation and AI were going to change the workplace significantly, it would create new jobs and not cause unemployment. They suggested that professionals should remain updated about changes in their field, develop expertise in multiple areas in their domain, and read and learn continuously. Automation and AI are opportunities, not threats, in that they free up the professional work force to address higher-level issues that machines cannot.
This Round Table is part of a series of discipline-specific conclaves that take place throughout the year at SJIM. These conclaves are organized to build industry-academia interfaces; to give students the opportunity to get their ideas clarified by practitioners; and for SJIM to create new knowledge about current topics in management.
